Is there any reason that a tire sized 255/70R15 wouldn't work on my 80? I know the two sizes are 225/70R15 (currently on my car) and the optional 255/60R15 but would this other size work possibly? I think I found a lead on the Goodyear Eagle #1 (not NASCAR edition) in this size and am hoping it might just work. What do you all think?
That tire is pretty big compared to stock. About 1.5" larger in diameter. My guess is that you'll end up with clearance problems. Either rubbing on the frame, or the wheelwell, or some other chassis component.

TOO BIG! let the SUVs use those. Pirrelli makes a "VR" speed rated scorpion in a 255/60/15 size. You do know that the 78-82 cars with this size tire did have some fender mods done to them, don't you. Chevy cut the inner lip at the leading edge and sometimes at the back edge too, for clearance with the 255/60/15 Goodyears. Be sure and check your fenders to make sure any wide tires clear, they rip-off very nicley on tire contact during hard cornering.
Well, it figures. I have been looking high and low for these tires. I was sort of hoping that since the size was sort of of a hybrid between the two factory offered tire sizes that it might work. I figured it would just be a wider version of the standard size that might work. The tread width is 10.2 with a diameter of 29" for a rim width 6.5-9.0 inches. Thanks guys!
...OK, not to keep beating this dead horse but what about a 275/60R15. Anyone tried that size with any success? The dimensions would be a tread width of 10.9 and a diameter of 27.9 if that helps.
The techs at Tire Rack are really excellent with fitment questions even if you're not buying tires from them, although they do have great prices. :thumbs:
The 255/60R15 is the optimal size that I would like to go for but with the line on the tire I found I can't get that size. Currently there are 225/70R15 Goodyear Eagle GT+4 with decent tread left on them but I think they are close to 10-12 years old. Now that I think about it, I have read you can get a 275 in the back with moving the e-brake cable bracketing. Sounds like too much of a hassle to me.
Yeah, I know Page, I have put more work into tire hunting than a sane man should. To me, the look of the tire is important on a Vette. I am not worried about speed ratings and all that jazz...not on this Vette. There would be pistons and valves all over the roadways way before I could reach 112MPH. :jester
I am basically looking for old stock tires in a Goodyear Eagle 1 street radial or a Firestone SS20...a slim chance in hell, I know. If all else fails, there is always the Goodyear Eagle Nascar, Firestone Indy 500, or BF Goodrich Radial T/A in sizes that will fit.
If I can't find what I am looking for, I am leaning toward the Eagle Nascar and blacking out the Nascar letters, or getting the Firestones and making the Firestone lettering white with tire markers.
When I buy tires for my 77, I'm getting 245/60R15.

This is what I have on my '77. It's getting harder to find tires in sizes for C3s. I used to buy Goodyear, BF Goodrich or Michelin, but now settle for Dunlap GT Qualifiers.
The 245's fit well, but are a little close to the rear spring. Much wider and I'd look at more extensive mods.
275/60/15's on the rear of my 79 that don't rub at all.

I have Pirelli Scorpion Zeros in this size (VR rated) Love the width. Might have to relocate or remove the Ebrake bracket to make them not rub though. The 28" diameter looks great. 255 60R15 would be my second choice, and the safest.
Tires that size will probably rub the body when turning and hitting bumps at the same time. I have BFGoodrich Radial T/A 255/60/15's on mine and the clearence is a bit tight with the wheels turned either direction.
I think I am going for the Nascar Goodyear Eagle in the 255/60R15 size. I will black out the Nascar letters giving it the look below. I know it makes the rest of the RWlettering asymetrical but I kind of like the look. I may even like the look of the Nascar letters once I get them mounted...who knows!?
