Default R4 compressor rebuild.....

Can anyone point me towards some rebuild instructions for the R4 air con compressor on my 80?

I think I can pick up most of the special tools, and the seals seem reasonably easy to come by, but even the shop manual doesn't go into detail about stripping the unit down.
I'm thinking of having the system recharged (hasn't worked for a year) and would like to build the compressor to take R134 (I understand this is just a question of using different internal seals - might be wrong there though?)

Yes, I know you can get ready built R4 compressors for this refridgerant, but that's no fun :)

I'd love to see this as well. My '92 Suburban has eaten two and I don't believe the rebiulders are any better at this than I am . I have a spare that works OK but leaks at the outside O-ring.

I am also interested in this answer :lurk:

Tried talking with several AC shops locally and on-line. Advice I get is to buy a new R4 compressor (~$200+ ). I would rather replace my front seal (after getting almost all of Autozones loaner tools to get the clutch/pully off) - and replace the pully bearing and at least try before spending upwards of $300 and flushing all the lines, evap, condensor, etc.

Whoa, seems I hit a hot spot here.
Well my search for info has been pretty fruitless thus far. You can easily come by the puller installer for the clutch/pulley assy. but going deeper into the unit is a bit unknown to me at the moment.
I've just had a reply from a guy on the corvette action centre, pointing me towards using "ES-12a" He had a lot of praise for it. Apparently it doesn't need a compressor change. It's an "environmentally friendly" direct replacement for R12. Almost sounds too good to be true

Still in need of rebuild info though, if anyone will oblige.....
