I have some old anti freeze ( Peak ) that has been sitting around for a few years. I know that it sits on shelves for some time, but how long is it good for if it hasn't been opened and has not been used.
How much is a Gallon? $7.00? Buy some fresh stuff for the Vette and use the old stuff for the DD. And don't forget the 2 bottles of "water wetter" and only 25% of anti-freeze (at the most).
I agree with you new is probably the safest way you say 25% antifreeze. What kind of water do you use to stop mineral buildup? I always heard that Peak antifreeze was the best. I aslo heard was to mix it with some of the old antifreeze that you are changing:
Distilled water is what I was thinking also, thru the years of changing this stuff what mixture would you recomend. First thread said 25% antifreeze and 75% distilled water. I guess Ill just chuck the old anti freeze and by new
Havoline sez that due to silicate instability (traditional antifreeze), shelf life is about 18 months. Silicate free antifreeze (extended life antifreeze) that the shelf life is 8 yrs. Charles
Thats good to know, the old stuff will go out to the enviromental center. What brand seems to hold up the best? It used to be Peak but who knows now
I don't have an answer to your question, but Tom Dewitt recommended a 50-50 mix. Antifreeze has some additives that are helpful for the cooling system. It is anti corisive and I think it keeps the water pump lubrcated. Plus it doesn't freeze.
But anti-freeze doesn't cool as well as water so that is why he recommended the 50-50 mix.
He also suggested I buy the stuff that is pre-mixed. For the simple reason that I can know for sure I got the mix right, and if I ever need to add any more it will maintain the mix ratio. Premixed costs a little more, saves a lot of trouble.
50/50 mix with distilled, for best freeze and boil protection .... 10 yr old anti-
freeze still doesn't freeze, BUT all the anti corrosion and other additive's are
shot,
