I have had trouble with my linkage jamming and not allowing me to downshift from third to second. Before I tear it apart, can anyone tell me where the bushings are located so that I can inspect? thanks
I'm working on the same error, but can't shift into first unless I'm rolling at about 5 mph. Have replaced washers and bushings to no avail. Considering the shifter rebuild kit for around $75 to see if that fixes it.
Question. What I believe in that kit is the interlock? Are there two? Mine only has one installed....there's room for another, and another would fix the problem that I am having. Don't mean to hijack....just found another Ohioan with similar problems and thought I'd offer my "issues" as well. Go Buckeyes
are their supposed to be busihings between the shifter rods and transmission paddles? Does anyone have acess to the factory nuetral shifter adjustment?
There is a special alignment tool you need to set up the stock shifter. Without it is an excersize in futillity. They are easy to make but you absolutely need it.
Get you a factory manual (from Helms or Vette vendors). It shows how to make the gauge (dimensions etc) that is used to align the shifter in neutral and the procedure. Just one of the first things you might want to be sure is right before looking for other sources of your problem. Be prepared though, in my opinion it is one of the most PITA jobs on a vette. Ain't no room! Chas
It's like someone with an engine problem, and a reply of "well, just swap a new motor in there....that will work better". Granted, while that may be true, it's easier to fix sometimes than to throw money at a simple problem.
It's not that I can't afford a new shifter for my problem, it's the fact that if I can repair it for a third of the money I'm going to.
From my manual I see washers, bushings, and clips. I've replaced some, but am curious why there is a spacer (interlock) between 1st/2nd gear and 3rd/4th gear but nothing between those and reverse. Mine is rubbing on reverse and that's the reason it won't go into 1st half of the time. From the top side if I put a screw driver tip in as a spacer my problems completely go away.
Someone please tell me what should be in the stock shifter as I look at it. 3 paddles, one spacer, and that's it? There's room for something else in there, between reverse and it's adjacent gear....but nothing. That binds together making it impossible to shift into first. I have to believe something belongs in there.
You need to look at the bottom of your shifter handle for wear that has occured over the years and can only be repaired by welding it up and re-profiling it. The worn handle will cause the problems you describe in a "rebuilt" assembly. I went to the Hurst with the stock style bolt on handle. I lost the great reverse lock-out but, gained confidence enough to use my Vette in autocross and drag racing with-out fearing for my Muncie's long term reliability.
Well, I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I just don't think Sigforty was trying to "hurt", is all. :)

:iagree:
There was not hurting intended some people just do not know that hurst makes a shifter for the car. I considered rebuilding mine before, but found the hurst to be a better improvement. It mounts to the transmission instead of a plate that bolts to the frame. Mounting this way helps eliminate any binding issues that are caused when the motor/trans torques over and the frame does not.
I also know alot more than to tell someone to to swap in a new engine for a problem.
I still like the fact that I've asked a question at least twice in this thread and STILL no one has answered it. Are there any spacers/interlocks in the shifter itself.
Hmm... rude people usually arent answered. This board is for advice, people only give it if asked nicely. People that are rude and start demanding things are usually just blown off. No one wants to talk to someone that is rude and jumps on anyoen that mentions something they didnt want to hear, or the answer wasnt simple enough. I will look at my shifter to try to help you out, but mine also is having problems with getting stuck in reverse, not sure why either. I have been contemplating going over to the hurst becuase im just annoyed with the notchy feeling of the shifter and its occasional problems.
The only thing i have on the bottom of my shifter is a flat rectangular metal piece that goes between reverse and 1st/2nd shifter. I dont see anythign between 1,2/3,4
