BB Exhaust Manifold Resurection
I finally finished repairing and porting my exhaust manifolds. It is a big step towards reassembling the engine since there are several accessory brackets that attach to them.
Here is the manifold after I removed it:
As you can see the air tubes were still there. The other A.I.R. plumbing was long gone and the outer holes had been plugged.
This is a picture of the passenger side manifold at the A/C bracket. The outer part of the hole had completely broken off and was held on by the stud. Who knows how many years that stud held on that little piece.
I soaked the manifolds in muriatic acid overnight and then sprayed them with phosphoric acid and let them soak overnight. I let them completely dry then wire brushed them (sure wish I had a sand blaster). Then I cut out the A.I.R. tubes and ground down the lumps that were no longer necessary. While I was at it I ground down the casting flash at the seams. Next, I sent them off to have the broken off piece welded back on and the holes at the A.I.R. tubes filled with metal. I replaced the old studs with stainless studs and coated both manifolds with calyx manifold dressing.
After all that work I decided to install them with a quality gasket.

Looks really nice! I know that in three of the states I have lived in with my 74 BB, all the A.I.R./emissions gear had to be on the car to pass the emissions inspection. (CA, VA, DE). It actually passed in all three! I am going to install a new cam, and reworked heads, so I will be following your lead this summer. :thumbs:

Nice job. Grinding down those bumps should help. I did the same. :thumbs:
