i'm in the process of doing this myself and was wondering how much will need to be replaced i have read that poa's are not available anymore and that expansion valves have to be replaced with new for the 134a. what is this vov? or a oriifice tube? thanks for any help :banghead:
I have an original 69 A/C system... I put in Ester oil charge and then charged it with R134a. I has been working fine for about 4 years. It is very inportant not to overchgarge when using R134a. It (R134a) is very sensitive to the exact correct amount. I did not do anything to the system except as stated above.
I got a conversion kit from Autozone for about $35, Comes with oil and 2 cans of 134 I think if I remember right. The oil is a special formula that is compatible with the old oil. You have to remove whats left, if any, of the old freon. It has stop leak in the freon. I converted mine 2 years ago and it still works fine

Re: a/c 134 conversion?? (EDDIEJ82)
I am doing my 75 right now. My top hose was bad so I replaced the hose, compressor, VIR unit, pressure switch, and all of the o-rings to the green ones.
You should also replace the high pressure hoses, and the "o"' rings. The molecular structure of R134a is such that it will bleed through normal rubber lines. The R143a specific lines are lined with teflon to prevent this. Also the "O" rings used with Freon are not compatible with the oil of the R143a system. They will work for a while. . . but not forever.
I purchased my conversion from ZIP, with all the "O" rings, schrader valves, oil, etc. The hose assy was additional, also from ZIP. The filter-dryer should also be replaced.
Keep in mind, the efficiency of R143a is not quite as good as Freon, but the long term maintenance cost will be far less, as well as the environmental benefits.
