The first things to make good are the safety items. Make sure the brakes and steering components are in good working order. Then check the suspension to make sure it is tight. There are a lot of small things but those are important for your safety. It does not matter how fast it is if you can't stop and steer it.
Welcome to the forum. Sweet lookin car! A tip on the sidepipes, use Harly Davidson Chrome cleaner on 'em. After you drive it, look to see if anything is on them(gum, plastic bags, etc.). That stuff will melt on 'em and they're a pain to get off.
NICE VETTE, im going to do the same thing that was done on your vette in about a week, just waiting for my tilt front end to arrive.
As far as keeping it in shape, its mostly just looking over it once a while, checking for any leaks, odd sounds, and basicly anything that seems out of place. Also i assume the frame is in good condition? If there is surface, which almost all vettes have, even mine, than i suggest that you coat as much of the frame as you can with some POR-15, its a rust preventive paint, that actually looks pretty cool, and will stop the rust from getting any worse. Hope you enjoy your vette, and that we'll see you around
