Got my car out a few days ago. Last nite drove it to gas station and when I pulled up to pump the engine sounded different at idle and it was loud. Today thru a
process of elimination found out it is air compressor. It's too loud to leave belt on and the clutch was not engaged. After removing belt the pulley spins freely with no noise. Will a good soaking with WD40 help? or do I need a new bearing on pulley end and can it be fixed without compromizing freon? Steve
The clutch bearing can fail and make a lot of noise. If it makes noise with the compressor off then that is the culprit. It spins 100% of the time wheather or not the copressor is engaged. It is replacable without loosing the refrigerant charge.
