Just got the vette out for the first drive last night, what a thrill. So I got thinking this might be a fun poll to play with. The guys that drive year round get to miss this every year. :yesnod:
Gotta say second is my personal favorite. I know the overdrive guys will probably stick to one gear.
When I was running the Muncie, 1st was a real dog, like swimming in a raincoat, 2nd started to come alive, hit 3rd, it was like a shot out of the cannon...course teh big rectangular ports had something to do with that as well.... :D
I voted 2nd on mine. It sounds the best to me at low speeds, which is what I'm usually in, thanks to traffic, but 3rd sounds good, as well, when I'm gunning it. :o
For both my L88 and the ZO6 3rd gear is good to 100mph+ at 6500rpm. From about 40mph on up it just plain hauls without creating serious traction issues. I could add that I love knowing that I still have 3 more gears, but that would be boasting and I wouldn't want to do that.
For some reason my Vette seems to haul best in 3rd but for Cruizin you can't beat 5th.
We have a our club's 30th birthday run this weekend and its a 2.5 hr trip each way. I might make it on one tankful if I'm gentle...... :D :D
5th gear is my favorite. With the torque of a blown bigblock you get into 5th as quick as possible and watch the rpm drop, the noise level goes down, gas mileage improves and yet the torque still sets you back.
5th by far.
There is nothing like the feeling of "banging off" 3rd gear with 17psi in the drag slicks and having the car veer to the right due to torque steer at 100+MPH (OH MI GAWHD! I hope I can collect this pig back up! before I cross the centerline!)
