I'm changing the tranny pan on my THD 400 to a deeper pan by Moroso and was planning on using studs instead of the existing bolts, what do you guys think? Also, was planning on adding a tranny cooler, I was looking at the ones by Perma cool that mount along the frame, anyone using one of these and how is the cooler tied into the existing lines..would like a neat connection instead of the hose clamps supplied (photos) Thanks
Re: Tranny pan bolts or studs and tranny cooler (73jst4fun)
Since the transmission pan is not a load carrying part of the transmission there would be no advantage to using studs rather then bolts to attach the pan. Are you sure that you have enough ground clearance for a deep sump pan?
Oil coolers are a good thing. I use a B&M cooler myself. You may want to take a look at thermo bypass units too. They will allow the oil to reach normal operating temp sooner and then flow in to the cooler to keep the temp stabilized.
There are 2 lines on your transmission for the cooler. The upper one is the return line and the lower one is the pressure out line. I like to use steel automotive fittings rather than the aluminum AN fittings whenever possible.
Re: Tranny pan bolts or studs and tranny cooler (1979toy)
I have plenty of clearance to add a tranny pan which holds an additional quart, and is 3" depth, the studs would be useful and alot easier on the tranny flange itself where the bolts thread in, it' just aluminum. The tranny fluid lines go to the radiator, that's where I would like a nice neat connection, I was hoping someone had some pics of what cooler they installed and where they located the cooler and the connections.....
Re: Tranny pan bolts or studs and tranny cooler (Twin_Turbo)
what's wong with the aluminium hose ends??? The only area where I wouldn't use them is on the brake system lines.
The darn things always seem to gall up when the auto parts store just closed and I don't have another fitting of the same size and a hose to make a new line. It's just my personal preferance. The guys that run top fuel dragsters seem to do OK with them. Maybe they keep extra fittings and hoses on hand.

Jay, if you're getting rid of the bolts for your TH400 pan, can I have them? I'm missing one or two and my Chevy dealer can't seem to get me the right bolts.

I'm betting you are using russel hose ends, they are an old design.
Re: Tranny pan bolts or studs and tranny cooler (73jst4fun)
I am a big fan of studs period. Everything is studed. Even my oil pan, I definitely would stud the tranny pan and everything else. I even use studs in my bellhousing to mount the transmission.
Studs can be carefully inserted into the aluminum full depth and then the gasket slid over them, then the pan and finally the nuts. If you screw one up the studs is replaced without damaging the transmission.
Over tighten a stud and the alumim does not strip.
Guys try studs on the rocker covers.. The gaskets lay on nice and the cover itself slids right over.
Never hesitate to stud anything.
Take it from a old guy that has been around.. STUD STUD STUD

I have studs for my oil pan and it is easier to install vs. the bolts for my tranny pan. Below is where I installed my tranny cooler which I believe is a simular design as the perma cool.
Re: Tranny pan bolts or studs and tranny cooler (Red73)
Thanks guys, that's what I thought, always use studs, I just got the Moroso pan for the THD 400 in the mail today and plan to mount it tomorrow, very well constructed, nice welds. Did anyone use locktite on the studs???? Red73, that's just what I was looking for, looks like the front passenger side behind the grill, I have an AC car with the condenser.....did the stock trans lines mate up (thread wise) with the cooler lines you installed? And what brand cooler is that your using, since I also have a 73 vert...

Blue loctite to hold the studs. You can remove it later. Just worked with a Loctite rep today. They have a new product out that is a stick. Comes in green blue and red. From mild to needing heat to remove. Works just like the liquid but not as messy. Could not get any samples but he is going to try to get me some. Comes in a chapstick type dispenser only a little bigger.
No more leaks!!!
