I just had my frame sandblasted. It is my understanding that I can just apply it to a sandblasted surface with no prepping. Is this correct? Also, it is my understanding that I can apply a top coat of chassis paint over the POR15. Is this correct? Or do I need to use a tie coat?
Acording to POR's directions...you need to soak it in "Metal Ready" before applying POR. This etches the metal so the paint can stick. I had bad luck with POR's topcoats. I followed the directions, but can scratch their topcoat off with a fingernail.

Use the metal ready and rinse it off after 20 minutes. It should turn to a white haze then use thePOR15. I too didn;t care for the POR15 top coats, rather high priced and didn't perform to expectations. I use a good spray paint for a top coat,Eastwoods has some good paint and I use Cast Blast on a lot of the metal parts. I also like the Eastwood clear coat. I found the satin gloss over the regular POR15 gloss black drops the sheen down to a nice satin finish. I've used POR15 directly on rust and had it peel off after a short time, other places it's really sticks-like your skin!

I top coated Por-15 Semi-gloss Black with Rustoleum Satin Black. I figured if I missed a spot with the por-15 I would get it with the rustoleum. I just waited for the Por-15 to cure to a finger drag or about 3 to 5 hours before spraying on the Rustoleum.
If you just sandblasted the surface, you can apply POR-15 directly onto the sandblasted surface, as there is enough rough surface to let it stick. Metal-Ready is for pickling smooth surfaces to allow the POR-15 to stick.
Topcoat can be applied directly onto the POR-15 surface. I used this method and can vouch for it.
BUT!!!! Be sure to wear old clothes, nitrile or rubber gloves, safety glasses, and preferably a face shield. I can also vouch for this- POR-15 will NOT come off your skin with anything but time!
PureSilver, thanks for verifying what I thought. I read on the por15 website that I could apply it directly to a sandblasted surface but wanted somebody to verify that from their experience. When can I apply a topcoat?
you are supposed to apply your topcoat around 3 hours after the por15 has been applied. Either that, or you can mist the por15 areas with primer 3 hours after painting and spray your topcoat at a later time, say a few weeks later or even a year. If you do neither of these and decide to topcoat your por15 later on, you need to sand it down until there is no shine to the por15 and it becomes dull, then you can spray a topcoat. A topcoat is not required if the por15 is not in direct sunlight, like the frame. I personally like the look of the gloss black por15 without a topcoat. It looks exactly the same as powerdercoating. You can either brush por15 on or spray it on. Brushing turns out pretty good considering it is usually used on the frame and is not going to be seen. Spraying it on seems like you would get much better results though. Brushing it on occasionally leaves brush marks, drag marks and bristles from the brush. If you second coat your brushed on por15, it will turn out much smoother. You apply the second coat about 3 hours after the first.
