After the success of his 1975 album Born to Run, Springsteen bought the 1960 Corvette seen here. Frank Stefanko took this photograph as part of a photo shoot for Springsteen’s next album, Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978). With his tousled hair and searching look, Springsteen recalls the young James Dean, movie star icon of the 1950s. Springsteen leans on the car’s hood but looks like he’s ready to jump, suggesting a man on the run, as if at any moment he could zoom off in his sports car, singing, “tramps like us, baby we were born to run!”
