Hi,

I will give you the Mass. rules on inspection. All states vary....
In Mass. if your car was equipped with a catalytic converter, it still has to
pass a visual inspection that it is still there for a sticker. If your 79 and
earlier car does not have it's cat. present, it can not be flunked for not
having it.....So in other words, 79' no cat. o-k, 80' no cat, not o-k.

The 1st year that a "Sniff-test" is required in Mass. is 1984, although the
standards are much lower than one would expect on a new car today....

I hope this helps
Mark B.

If you expect logic, next guess. Sometimes evidently the only requirement to be head of an govt. auto agency is to be a senator's wife! No knowledge of autos is required.

Had to go look at your profile to help you here.

In Texas, if a car is less than 25 years old, it is subject to emissions testing in Dallas, Houston, and El Paso, plus their surrounding counties (Austin coming soon). The emissions equipment must be in its original configuration. That means if you cannot convert to true duals with 2 cats -- gotta be 2 pipes into a y-pipe into 1 cat.

Cars older than 25 years in these areas are subject to a visual inspection to determine that all emissions equipment is in its original configuration. No actual emissions test, per se.

Cars older than 25 years with Antique license plates are not subject to inspection, so they are nominally exempt from emissions testing.

I believe it's possible for a vehicle driven less than 5000 miles a year to receive a waiver from the DPS after failing the test. Never heard of anyone actually doing this, however.

Good luck!

This is one of the reasons I registered my '79 as an antique. I hate the plates, but for the ridiculous low registration fee + no inspection, it couldn't be passed up. Heheheh...

Yeah, but he's got an '82. It's gonna be 2½ years before that's an antique
