I am replacing the battery cables in my 68. The originals were top terminal, #2 gauge wire. Corvette Central sells a side mount, #0 gauge replacement for a 72-74. I would like to upgrade to the heavier wire and side terminals. Will this 72-74 cable fit my car?
Yes they will fit. 68 and early 69 had the top terminal battery facing terminals forward. When they switched to side terminals in mid 69 the battery still faced forward making it difficult to hook up the cables. In 70 they turned the battery around and the first few cars had the 69 cables which were almost too short. The cables were lengthened a few inches to make easier hook up in 70. So 70 and up will work fine. I have the short top terminal cables on mine so I have to turn the battery around.
I always get flak over this answer but.... IF you have a rebuilt or aftermarket alternator, most likely the problem is it is a Generic "Chevrolet alternator". Due to the fact that the crank pulley on corvettes is smaller than it's Chevy counterpart, the alternator turns slower. So they used a Corvette specific alternator that puts out more amps at a slower speed. The aftermarket doesn't list them that way.
Where does the other end of the (positive) battery cable connect on a 1970? I have some electrical problems and would like to inspect the cable at the other end, but I'm not sure where it is? I have side mount battery.

It connects to the starter. Negative connects to the frame below the battery box
Larry B. Thanks for the info about the battery cables and the alternator. I will order the 72-74 cables, bigger is better. Thanks for the info on the alternator. Also, the pulley on my alternator is 2 3/4 OD. Is this the smaller "Corvette" style alternator (OK, in this case bigger isn't better).
