I have a 1970 Vert. Before I had the car it had a driver side half shaft failure. IT TOTALLY RIPPED THE BATTERY BOX apart! Bubba put metal and UNDERCOATING to conceal it... not a big deal right? WRONG! I ordered a cut out box from a Contemporary Corvette and it is the wrong year. The negative cable hole is the wrong side and WORSE, the box dimensions are different on the outside. Are the box dimensions different on all years? I am sending the box back and still hunting for a new one.
Before you post.... There is NO WAY I can graft from what I have left in the car, just fragmented pieces. Does anyone know what years will fit? Please help... I am truly stumped on my options.....
Re: AAAAAHHHHHHHHH... need help..... (Mr.Gearhead)
If I recall correctly from my '74, the positive cable to the starter should come out the front right of the box. This to me seems bass-ackwards, since the positive side of the battery as it sits in the box is on the left.
I don't recall where the negative cable comes out, but I think it's on the bottom left rear - as the box sits in the car.
The negative and the postive holes are right next to each other. My frame gound is on the opposite side. Also, the box dimensions are way different. Contemporary Covettes stated this is why they do not like to sell these parts....... ah... a little late don't you think? I know they tried to help so for that I am very thankful. I need this compartment badly.... it is now holding up my rebuild.... ANYONE? BUELLER? BUELLER? ANYONE?
Yep, the negative cable is an easy fix. The box dimensions are different. Not sure what year of this battery box, but the outside corners do not mate up to the 1970's pattern. The 1970 seems to be more "square".
Re: AAAAAHHHHHHHHH... need help..... (Mr.Gearhead)
The big hole on the bottom of that box (front left in that picture) is where the positive battery cable passes through. The 2 small holes (on the right not visible in that picture) were originally for the battery vent tubes to pass through. There should be another big hold on the right for the negative cable. Where the cables pass through the box, there is supposed to be a rather large, rubber grommet to protect the cables.
Thanks for the reply. Actually, the hole in the bottom on this pic is for the negative cable. The picture shows the box turned facing us. When installed, it is close to the differential, the inside right. On my car, the hole is on the left, the outside of the car. It does have a opening directly above the hole in that is for the positive, same as my original. I called everywhere today and still cannot find a 1970 Battery compartment. STILL NEED HELP HERE!
can anyone post some pics of a 1970 Battery Compartment?

Wait a minute.
The battery box is installed in the car the way it is pictured if you were standing where the drivers seat would be and looking toward the rear of the car. The hold down threaded bung is toward the rear of the car, not the front. If you look at that picture, you will see the part of the box that goes over the diffy on the left side of the part (as pictured.
