Default crate engines

I recently purchased a 75 with a 350 "crate" engine. Can anyone tell me anything about this type of engine. How can you determine the HP on this engine.

There are many "crate" engines. Most use that term to refer to performance motors that come completely built by the manufacture.
The manufactures also sell complete motors that are not really "performance" motors.

Go to http://www.paceparts.com -- on the left side they have a link to performance crate engines and also right below that is a link to replacement engines.

That may help you out some.

Look for some type of insignia that the manufacturer could have put on it. There are so many crate engines out today that it would almost be impossible to just guess, GM makes performance crate engines themselves. So just sort of crawl around and see if there is a plate or something on it that could identify who made it.

Casting numbers off the block and heads should give you an idea of what it is. If it has alum heads it might be a ZZ series, if vortec heads and 1 peice rear main it might be a HO series and if stock heads then probably a base LM-1 engine.

The most common "crate" engine is the GM Goodwrench LM-1. When purchased, it is a brand new engine manufactured by GM in Mexico. It costs less than $1500. Similar in many ways to the original L48. It's a good engine, not a screaming performer, but a few peformance mods can really wake it up.

If the engine is black, it's a good guess you've got one of these.
