Nice, L82, same as mine. The HEI isnt bad, just get the MSD upgrade for it, takes the coil out of the actual dist. and adds a 6 series ignition box. It runs 260$ for the 6AL version, its under MSD-8500
When I rebuilt my 79 last year, I looked into upgrading my stock HEI but held off until I could tell a little more about my new engine. While waiting, I kept reading the threads here on the Forum about performance tuning and ensuring the distributor's advance curve was correct. In checking my stock HEI, turns out that it was about as good as it gets. Long story short, I've still got my stock HEI and saved a few bucks.
About a week ago I installed a Mallory HEI distributor in my 75 vert...purchased it from Jegs for about $150. Really impressed with the quick service & delivery...Especially impressed with the distributor...guaranteed not to fail up to 7500 RPMs.
How often should these be replaced? I'm running my stocker now at ~70k miles and I guess its OK, but I am putting a new motor in (basic LM1 for now) and not sure if I should go with a fresh one or buy a rebuilt one or keep the one I have and transfer it over.
thanks

I have a HEI in the 79 (ZZ4). Used the weight/spring kit from ACCEL with and the coil and module upgrade. Works great, easy install. OEM HEI is a good unit, springs and weights let you play with your adance curve.
