Is there a difference in the main caps between these two engines? I just pulled the pan on my 78 to look at the rod bearings and it has 4 bolt mains. I don't think it's the correct engine and as soon as I can get the casting numbers off the block I'll be posting that as a question as well. The engine pad is clean (meaning it looks like the block has been decked). I know someone has been into the engine, but now I'm not sure if it's original or not. The dipstick tube is on the correct side for the model year however. If it's not original it just means no heartburn over dropping a 406 later!
It has been reported that at times GM ran low on 2 bolt blocks and used 4 bolt ones in the L48 to keep production going. Seems a forum member or 2 confimed this as they had matching # L48 eng's with 4 bolt blocks.
If an engine assembly plant temporarily ran out of 2-bolt blocks, they'd use 4-bolt blocks instead. So once in a while you'll find a Caprice with 4-bolt mains. The same holds true for the L48 -- once in a while you'll find one that has 4-bolt mains.
I believe that the casting #'s will just tell you what it came with. . .
If the numbers match, then you're good from that perspective.
The L-82's also had larger valves, different cams, and I believe forged pistons. If your's is original, and an L-48, I think you should have a cast iron intake as opposed to an aluminum one that L-82's came with.
Yes. There is nothing special about the blocks beyond 2-bolt/4-bolt. It's the stuff that goes into them and on them (heads, pistons, crank, etc.) that make the difference...
Damn, i have an L82 trim kit, too bad the guy who i bought it from had to go and toss a rod through the engine, so now i have to go buy a damn 4 bolt block!

All true except for the aluminum intake...on '80's at least..

The original intake weighed about 1 ton (felt like it anyway). I removed and replaced it with a Edelbrock RPM and Edelbrock carb. setup. Had a helluva time getting clearance with the breather though. I ended up going with a drop base and a 2" filter and some minor mods to that!!
