Default Help! Engine hanging half out…

1969 BB 427 with manual transmission removal (attempting removal).

I have a cherry picker reaching over a fender. Car is on jack stands.
I took the engine mounts clear off. Removed the bell housing bolts.
Right now I have the engine picked up about 1 off of where it was setting on the engine mounts… bell housing is about ½ from hitting the firewall.

The motor has separated from the bell housing about 1 and now it is stuck. It doesn’t seem to move forward any further. I have a jack under the transmission that I’ve been trying to keep supported… but it is hard to know if I am pushing up on the transmission too hard or not enough for support. I’ve loosened it a little and tried pulling the motor straight out but no luck there either.

I notice the fly wheel isn’t parallel with the face of the bell housing. Should it be? It looks like I would need to let the motor down to parallel it up. I wonder if I’m wedging the spline shaft in some direction that is preventing it from coming out.

I don’t have the transmission mounts loosened…. Also I haven’t disconnected the drive shaft from the transmission. I assumed I didn’t need to… Correct?

Any ideas?

Sounds like what I did 12 years ago on a previous 73 BB Vette... In my case, I forgot to take out the small bolts (I think there are 4) that ring the outer edge and hold the access plate to the FRONT of the lower portion of the bellhousing. Look right behind your oil pan where the bellhousing starts. You'll see the plate facing the back of the oil pan. Once out, you can easily straighten it out on a work bench with a hammer and a light touch - don't ask how I know! That is probably it!

I would say that is the problem. The input shaft is locking in the clutch plate because of the angle. try jacking the bell housing until the flywheel is parallel to the bell housing. Maybe even lowering the motor back down to help or changing the lift points to get the front of the motor up.
Also try loosening the pressure plate bolts to allow the clutch plate to move.

Sounds like you have the transmission input shaft still ingagaed in the crank or clutch disc. Try to lower the engine and level off the tranny to engine then use a pry bar to separate the two. once you get the tranny loose you should be able to pick the motor up. Are you using a tilter,if not it would be a lot easier. Also I like to leave the mounts onthe block just in case you need to lower it back into position.

little late but when I pull it from the side I situate the picker so that the boom is offset toward the front of the car so when the eng breaks free from the trans it swings forward just enough to clear the trans. When installing it I situate it dead on so you have to pull the eng toward the front of the car and then when the you mate the trans the eng will want to swing toward it.

Hey... IT IS OUT!!!!!
Thanks for the help Guys! I let the motor down and moved the lift point a little to the front. That did it! Fevre, Yes.. I also had the cherry picker offset a little to the front of the car. The VERY SCARY part was raising it high enough and wheeling it over the fender... It is now 5 feet away from the car... Car is safe now..

Thanks again for the quick help guys!!! :flag

AH yes the joys of removing an engine without a leveler/tilter, glad you got it out but it is 5 times harder getting it in without one

MotorHead, I can sure bet it would make life a lot easier wiht a leveler/tilter. I'm going to order one and have it ready for when it is time to get it back in. Looks like HarborFreight has one for $32

Also put a jack under the bell housing it is a little easier if the bell housing is pushed up towards the top of the tunnel when you install

I just went through all that, pulled motor and trany at the same time, but I bought one of those equalizing bars, they work really well, I had engine out in less than an hour. Back in was a different storry!
