The smallblock pump is unique to the '71 through '81 Corvette. It it a nick longer than a traditional short smallblock pump and also uses a 3/4" pilot shaft which means that if you were to use a traditional short pump you would have to use a new pump pulley and shim it out.
I don't know what the big deal is, but your A/C Delco jobber can get these BRAND NEW for about $112 and it will fit your car like the original one did. I've also had several of mine rebuilt by water pump rebuilders in Hemming's for less than $40 and I got my exact pump back which I know fits

The reason I was asking is that Edelbrock, Stewart and Milodon all have separate part numbers for the 71 to 82 waterpump. Thanks all for the great response.

Check with Jeg's and Summit online catalog first. If it's not there then do something outrageous like type into an Internet search engine: "Chevrolet short waterpump adapter" and see what happens.
Yes, they absolutely are made. I think at least Milodon makes it but I'm not sure. Once you know the part number you can special order it from Jeg's, Summit or whoever you get your parts from.
