Default Chilton's says don't do this.....

Just put my mechanical tach drive distributor back in. Decided to install dist so tach cable is not at too tight a bend, and moved spark plug wires around as needed. Chilton's says to keep the point's adjusting window to the left of the engine's centerline or oil flow to the right side valve train can be interupted by the distributor body. I looked down inside the dist hole in the intake and can't believe this is true. Could this apply to small blocks only? Am I missing something here ? Did I do something I am going to regret later ? Your opinions please.

You should be able to get the distributor in and cable connected without a lot of problem. Since you have it out check the gear for the spotface location, it should be inline with the rotor. You might want to check the cross gear for wear too. I see you're in Branford, I have a couple of tach drive distributors I rebuilt, if you want to see the things I'm referring to.

Believe very little of what Chilton's manuals says. They are wrong alot when it comes to Corvettes...The distributors they are refering t are the 265 cid V8 made in 1955 1nd 1956. Also the early 396's may have been that way. Aftermarket manuals are expesive toilet paper. Just my opinion

Larry,
Just came home from a local car show. At the vendor tents I was able to see some old distributors. You are correct in saying this problem only exists in very early engines. I could see that the distributors were not machined for 360 deg oil passage. Thanks for the input.

Some engineer probably couldn't fathom why anyone would need to turn the distributor more than a couple of degrees. Only a guess.
