After I drive my car for a little bit, the car will sound like it wants to die. The RPMs will flucuate from around 2000 down to 0 and the Tach will just jump back and forth like that for awhile. Sometimes if I just give it a quick stomp on the car it will stop, but always come back.
Also, under full throttle, my exhaust will pop and the car will kind of bog.
What mods have been done to the engine & what carb are you running? Has this problem appeared suddenly or gradually gotten worse over time? Have you made any changes recently to your engine? I agree with comp to check for vacuum leaks. Verify your timing as well. If vacuum & timing are ok have a look at your carb. You are in for some good learnin, fortunately the forum is full of good info. Rely on the search function

Well my whole engine carb setup isn't that old..maybe 1000 miles.but it has kind of been doing it for awhile. It has a new air filter. Could it possibly be the fuel filter or fuel pump? I'll go check all the vaccumn likes today..i'm not really good at this engine stuff..how would I check the timing? or what should it be at? Dont call me stupid!
Also it has a Holley 4160, The engine has heads, cams, .30 over pistons
One thing I thought of....could it possibly be a wrong size power valve?
Edit: Also I tried to use the search engine, but couldn't find much to help. So I'm sorry if this has some up before
HI
I have a similar problem. A little while ago my 79 L48 started to just fail to fire when I kick down. Tacho drops to 0 but as soon as i let the gas pedal go everything is fine again. this only started after i had my ignition reset. I find it happens especially when the engine is cold. but it doesn't happen all the time. Every time i start the engine it runs differently. as far as i can imagine it must be some problem with the distributor. I changed the delco cap and coil and vacuum advance but it still happens every now and then, but a bit less since the new vacuum advance is in. i guess it must be some wrong advance setting.. but ??
or maybe the distributor is worn out ??
the only thing left to do for me is to replace the main distributor shaft i guess.
someone know what this could be?
thanks
Hey, i had the same exact problem on my vette, and 81 as well, i changed the carb, i had a holley, not sure if it was the same, to an edelbrock performer 600, it never happened again.

I agree with you. I think It might be the holley. But I don't have the money to change it out right now Hmm that sucks.
