Default Thinking of EFI?

For those who care...here's the current state of my harness and electronics. (Holley commander 950 setup). I pre-assembled it inside. It gets installed next week or I get kicked out!

It's been quite a learning process, and not for the faint of heart. When I'm done, the Vette will have a pretty much stateof-the-art wideband O2 EFI setup.

You will love the C950 system. The software, in my opinion, is the best part of the whole package.

My tuner also says that it is the most robust and the easiest to use software that he works with.

Enjoy the installation - that part sucks.
Getting the car tuned is not real fun either.

But hoping into the car on a cold cold day or even when it's over 115 out and having it start right up, that's worth the work. Never having to play with metering rods, jets, accel pump squirters, or idle mixture screws EVER AGAIN -- that is REALLY worth it !!

Ach!!! Too many wires. I'll stick with the tried and true:

Looks like the bowl of spaghetti I had last nite! Good luck. Are you tuning it yourself?

Maybe I'm just a big geek but I like tuning my engine more than I like driving the car.

Default Commander 950

I was looking at the Summit Racing website and see they make two different kinds of Commander 950 setups.

One is a throttle body type
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...57#largerimage

The other is the multiport type
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...57#largerimage

Which one did you choose to go with. There is a big difference in the price which could sway a person one way or the other. I like the look of the multiport and would lean to go that way. I am sure it would be better for performance and mileage. Which way did you go? Just curious. I am wanting to get around to adding this to my vette eventually.

Well...neither. I bought just the electronics with the "generic" GM harness since I'm bolting on a supercharger. The S/C has 8 injectors so the harness will plug right in.

The interesting part is all the control you have over the other engine compartment items. You can control the fuel pump, fan, a/c, and other components based on what's happening in the engine. I had to get everything together to ensure that everything plugged together correctly, and to wire up some new connectors like one to the fuel pump, electric fan, and electric water pump. I also am using the heated wideband O2 sensor (the box in the middle), so it has to be wired in to replace the normal unheated O2 sensor that came with the system. The wideband sensors allow very precise monitoring of the air to fuel ratio.

The fuel pump is an Aeromotive pump - it will do the job, but I had no idea these things are so large! It also needs a pre-filter and a filter for the injectors - what a pain.

The red flat thing in the front is a crank trigger, part of the MSD ignition system (I'm using the MSD digital box).

Also interesting is that one of the cheapest parts is the laptop computer. It was only 50 bucks (an old Toshiba Win98). If I run over it in the shop, I'll just get another.

I have no idea what my mileage will be, but most other EFI users report mileage similar to or better than carbs, without hot and cold weather starting problems. Since I'm going with a new engine, I won't have any previous mileage to compare to. I'm guessing it will be similar mileage to that of a Toyota Prius....

Zwede uses the multiport setup and seems to be pleased with the results. He's got a very clean installation and good web site showing details.

I am running the C950 with the 700 CFM throttle body -- good to 400 - 450 HP depending on fuel pressure. That is good enough for my little 350. I had to go with TBI to fool Arizona into thinking I was still running the carburetor. I can't change to fuel injection here because it would include the removal of an emissions control device (the carburetor and the A.I.R. system).

I'm going with fuel injection someday, but I'm also going with DIS. Great accuracy, and easier for me to tune. http://www.ronsraceshop.com/companies/electro.php

Why bother with all that crap a well tuned Q-Jet is almost as good as all that EFI stuff. It has been proven that a Q-Jet at full throtle is more efficent the an EFI system

Hmm... Tunability, the fact I like being able to easily start my car when it's cold outside, having the ability to support my 400hp engine but getting 16-18mpg instead of 10-12. You keep your Q-Jet. I'll stick with the new stuff. There is a replacement for displacement. It's called technology. Honda S2000, 240hp NA 2.0L 4 cylinder. Good stuff...

looks pretty good man. I know a guy who's got one of those and keeps a laptop on the passenger seat. He is playing with it all the time. He likes programming it more than driving it. Let us know how it runs when you get finished
