I was minding my on business cruising in my '70 corvette and stopped to fill up with fuel. After filling the tank, as I started to put the gas cap on, the gas cap gasket decided to do a high dive into the tank opening!! I had never even noticed the gasket was loose until it let go. I looked inside the tank with a flashlight, but could not see it.
Any ideas on how to fish it out? Murphy's law says it will hang up on the gauge sending unit someday soon. In the mean time I made a gasket from some gasket material I had on hand until I order a correct one. Man, I hate to drop the tank for something this stupid.
I pulled a sock out of my tank with a pair of BBQ tongs. Just prepare a piece of wire with a hook and keep it handy, when it eventualy shows up just hook it out. I certaily wouldn't pull a tank for it.
I would not think you need to pull the tank.Your tank should have the sender unit on the bottom of the tank. Drop the spare tire stuff, drain the gas, take down the sender and fish out the gasket. Change the sock while you are there. Check the rubber lines for cracks also.
