I have just reinstalled the lockout cable on my manual tranny after changing my steering coulmn to a tilt/tele. The arm makes a metal sound as I put it in reverse and the key comes out OK. Is there an adjustment so the cable does not cause the arm to hit the column or is there a big difference in the two types of columns? I am assuming there is some kind of adjustment but the install instructions in the manual are a little vague. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Wells
There is a slight adjustment available at the connection to the steering column. There is no adjustment at the transmission.
The plate that mounts to the front of dash (in the engine compartment) has the reverse lockout cable mounted to it. That plate is held in place by a welded stud and a carriage bolt with two nuts inside the car. The plate inside the car that is part of the the steering column has slots to accept the stud and bolt.
Loosening the nuts should allow you some limited movement of the plate on the front of dash. This will provide some adjustment since moving the plate will move the the lockout cable sheath relative to the column lower lever. That is the only adjustment available.
Also, there is no difference between an T&T column and a standard (non-adjustable) column with respect to the lower lever.
One other thing. The position of the lower end of the steering column is fixed when you tighten the two nuts on the stud and the bolt that holds the outside plate. When you loosen and reposition the outside plate, you still want to make sure that the steering column is pointing right at the steering gear.
The way to check is snug up the two nuts and now to inspect the stop pins on the steering gear flexible coupling and make sure that they are central to the two window openings on the steering column flange. Check that they are central and not contacting in one location; then rotate the steering wheel one quarter turn (90 degrees) and recheck that the pins are still central. Now the two nuts can be tightened inside the car.
my shifter lockout is sticky when coming out of reverse. feels like it hangs up and will not release and unclick unless i jiggle the shifter around a bit. is this a shifter thingor a cable thing?
