Tach reading incorrectly

I just purchased a 79 Vette, and the tach reads way to high, it goes from o to almost 5K when cranked, i noticed it does not have a filter out by the distributer, could this be the problem, if not got any ideas?....thks Don

It most probably is. If the search feature is working there are some posts in here somewhere about making your own tach filter.

I've been having this problem recently myself although I do have a tach filter, I guess its starting to give out.

I too have a filter and my tach jumps at idle, I thought it may be my distributor but after changing it I still have the problem.

Here's the diagram of the tach filter. It's a pretty simple circuit to reproduce. Let me know if you have any questions.
