I can't find the original post, but someone as a side note modified their transmission crossmember so they could remove the exhaust in one piece.
I'm very interested in doing this if it does not weaken the frame. Could someone please post a pic of the right way to do this?
Thanks,
-Dan

I have a crossmember modified so the exhaust passes underneath and not through the holes. At the same time I move the exhaust outboard more to keep the hea off the transmission.
I don't know about posting pictures with this new forum. Last night I tried posting one and it wouldn't post.
I will try agian. I also feel me modified crossmember is as strong or stronger then stock.
Thanks norval,
I like your idea about moving the exhaust outward, but a lot of work. I don't own a welder so everything will have made then brought in.
Here is what I was thinking forgive the drawing skills)
If I weld on the side reinforcement plates, maybe I don't need to make the caps for the holes?

I can see your problem if you can't weld. For any welding shop in your area it would be cheap enough, far less then an hours work. The upper U plates need to be welded on, bolting is NOT good enough. It would never become and intrical part of the structure.
I would also make the U plate extend up as far as possible, the material at the top of the knotch is important. If you can extend this a little up towards the floor it will help alot.
You must have some friend who has a stick welder and will give you a hand?? Weld it in place.
Thanks norval,

Dan. I would cut a peace of cardboard to make a templete. Then cut two or four peaces of 2x2x3/16 inch angle iron cut to lenth Then using the templete lay it on the angle mark and cut out the half circle where the exhaust pipe goes. Do this on both sides and weld it in place. If you could do both front and rear using only two pcs. of angle that would be better than using four smaller pcs. I've been welding for 35 yrs. and thats the way I would do on my Vette. I just made my cross member removeable because I just put in a 5 speed but, I have 67 side pipes or I would have made the same modifications you want to do. This way.
I'm meeting a welder on monday to give me a price and time frame on building a tubular crossmember like the one's they sell for camaro's and chevell's. I want to be able to run 3" exshaust staight back and not hug the trans like a stock crossmember. I saw one posted a while back that some one had made with a saftey hoop built on. I'll post any info I get on monday. Is there any difference between the c3 crossmembers, or a 350or a 400 trans?
Yes, by the time the 350 trannies were used cat-assed-trophic converters were in use, and so the hump was introduced to the driver's side, no loop for the exhaust, just on the pass side...
Now I'm having second thoughts also, maybe I SHOULD modify my already hacked up crossmember to something like Norval has...hmmm.....
Just make a tubular one. The stock one is a big heavy thing that really should have never been put on a sports car in the first place. Same with the differential crossmember.

Mine is even heavier than the stocker since there's quite a bit of new metal on it, thicker as well. I'm probably gonna stay with the stock one, I put so much work in it making it fit the tranny, the exhaust and the frame (the through bolt hole is in the wrong place), screw the weight savings. Also, have you seen steel prices lately? Goddamnit, it doubled in just a few months. Damn chinese

You might want to check out Bowtieoverdrives. I don't know if they have one for the stock tranny, you'll have to look, but I do know that they have them for O/D conversions. (I bought one, nice unit) It hugs the floorpan very closely, so you can do whatever you want with exhaust.
