Coil wiring question?

Coil wiring question?

73 454; I know where the basic wires go but it seems I have a single black wire that I had taped together with the the other two coil wires. I even put a new end on it. The only problem is I don't know where it goes. I have the dist connected and the white and black wires on. Does this even belong on the coil or is it a ground? It goes into the wiring harness behind the block.

Ballast resistor by-pass wire for the ignition start switch would be my guess.

Check that wire with a volt meter. If it IS from the starter, it should only put out 12v while the engine is cranking. If it is the correct wire, double it up with the resistor lead under +. But for some reason, I'm thinking that the wire off the starter should be purple. (?)

On my 70 BB I have two wires on the + and one on the - in regards to the coil. Hope this helps.
