Not sure if 79 and 81 speakers were the same, but, My 81 uses 6x9 in the back. The Boston Acoustics from Tweeter Center fit perfect and sound very good.

I think they are the same but I have read posts here that say you have to build a custom box to fit a 6 x 9 in the corner. There is something in the FAQ on how to do it. but I'm just looking for a direct fit. I beleive the original is rectangular but most people put a 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 for better sound.

ok here it goes... the stock speakers were 6x9's the problem is in 1979 the speaker technology wasnt as advanced as it is today meaning very small magnets and paper cones, with todays improvements come bigger magnets witch add depth to the speaker causing it to not fit inside of the shallow orignal hole which is why most people make a very simple custom box. now there are several options that will slip right in the stock spots, custom autosound makes 1 or 2 styles and i also hard talk about others that have small magnets, either check ecklers or just measure the depth of the hole and measure the depth of possible speakers.... hope i helped some

I was looking for direct fit also. Replaced front speakers, 4x6 with Boston Acoustic FX7 and rear speakers 6x9 with Boston Acoustic NX97. These are kick a$$ speakers and need no mods to fit. Check them out at Tweeter.
