Need input on registering vehicle at DMV

Need input on registering vehicle at DMV
Ok,
First off I wanna thank all of you for your patience, I'm just trying to get all the info I need and I keep getting different answers from different people.
I'm in Louisiana and I know I need to goto the DMV with a Notarized Title and a Bill of Sale. What I'm trying to find out is this: If my bill of sale says I paid $500 for the car, will I pay tax on $500 or will they look up the current value of the car and turn around and charge me tax on the full value of the car? Being that the car is 33 years old seems it would be hard for them to justify charging me tax on say $15,000 (just putting up a figure).

I wouldn't be greedy. If the amount looks suspicious, they can ask to examine the car and then assign their own estimate. I would either report what you really paid (the right thing to do) or a "believable" amount. You might get away with it, but...messing with DMV can get ugly. Furthermore, if you're amount doesn't match what seller reported, you can be charged with fraud.
