Default 1978 a/c question

What should temp. be coming out of vents with a/c on high with outside tem in high 80's? Mine doesn't seem very cold.I had new compressor installed last year with the new freon.
Thanks

I had my 78 converted to R134a and even though it blows fairly cold, being in 95 degree heat in Central Florida in July is kinda hard to over come. I just got finished insulating the interior with Reflectex and Jute, but I have not had a chance to really give it drive in the mid day as of yet to see if it made much of a difference.
Hope it helps.

Default Vent Temp...

Typical vent temp range is between 46 and 64 degrees. If you get yours to 64 or lower you will be blowing cold air. Anything above 64 and I have found it is just not cold enough.

This is with max a/c on, windows up, fan on high, temp set to the coldest setting, hood down and the a/c has to be on for a few minutes to get a stable reading.

Thanks Pete, We are going to give it a shot of freon this morning and hope that does it as it is a new compressor last year.

We need more info. Is it R12 or R134? When you changed the compressor did you change the receiver/drier and the orifice tube? At 85 degrees outside temp. you should have about 48 degrees out of the vents. Any number of things can reduce the temp. from low freon to a clogged orifice tube to bent fins on the condenser. Reply with specifics, and we can help pinpoint the problem better. Don't just throw more freon at it, especialy if it is R134. The additional freon will increase head pressures, causing a reduction in cooling, which is going in the opposite direction.
Good luck.
