I need to rechrome the bumpers, front and rear, on my '71. I had the rears rechromed once before and it didn't seem to last very long. I suspect it was just a poorly done job, but I was wondering if anyone else has done this and how happy you are with it?
The bend on the lower side showed discoloration and some corrosion in just a year or two. The car has been in storage for a long time, and I am planning a full restoration. I like the idea of using the original bumpers but not if the plating doesn't last better than before.
Advanced Plating in TN did a good job on a remote mirror I sent them. Price was fair, turnaround was accurate, and the plating is very THICK. I would send other parts to them.
I had visible sanding scratches in some places where they had sanded off the old chrome and extra flash on other places. On the underside there was still visible rust. The work was done at a place called Show and Go in Richardson Texas.
Show & Go is a real pricey place. The price they quoted to replate side pipe covers was only a few dollars less than new ones.
If you attend the swap meet in Arlington next month, there will be a vendor there which attends most of the swap meets. They are out of the Houston area and did some replating for my buddy and I. What we were not happy with, they redid until we were happy. The price was reasonable and turn around was about a month or the next swapmeet they attended.
I wish I could remember the name. They have a big display with a gold colored sign. They did the plating on my buddy's air pump and it has been sitting outside for 3-4 years with no discoloration, pitting, or blemishes.
Maybe someone here will know their name.
I don't know if this is going to help anyone but I thought I'd throw this out there. A place two hours from me charges not for the chrome or per item but rather how long it will take to prep the items being chromed. Kind of look at it like a paint job minus the material cost. The way I see it, if I know that a piece will take a lot of work and cost more to rechrome then the part itself I'll just purchase a new one.
