Outside mirror well nuts?

Default Outside mirror well nuts?

Are the well nuts to mount the outside mirrors any thing special? I picked up some at Lowes today and beore I start drilling I want make sure that they dont require special nuts.

The ones on my '75 are the same as the luggage rack. They have a rubber barrel that compresses as the screw is tightened. Check the catalogs for pics.

The well nuts I got from Lowes are standard well nuts. The question is that it appears that the "collar" of the well nut, the part that aligns in the gasket, is thicker than the gasket. I am wondering if the the collars are thinner.

Default Well Nuts

I just used some of the rubber ones this weekend. They worked great except that the collar was thicker than the gasket. It was an easy fix; using a razor blade, you can easily make the rubber collar thinner than the gasket (and smaller in diameter also if you need to). After modification, the rubber well nuts worked great.
