Hi everybody since i´m kinda new in the whole "corvette" thing I was wondering what year the Stingray Corvettes were available, because my brother recently bought a ´81 vette and it´s a Stingray but some people say that the Stingray vetts were only available throughout the year 1976 is that correct or...? anyway here is the ´81 vette my brother just bought -----> http://www.miles-pocketwatches.com/A..._Corvette.html
Can be debated on 78-82. Many changes. Note that the 78- rear glass is reminiscent of the 63-67 coupe. So they could have continued it & some consider all C3 to be Stingrays.
78- 25th anniversay of the Corvette- not Stingray. They were already working on the C4 & McLellan had said the styling would be reeled in. 84 induction & 700R4 were in production in 81. So the focus was on the C4. CORVETTE says it all anyway.
Correction Ganey, the correct years are 63-67 and 69-76 The 68 was a Corvette only, 69's were Stingrays and the badges disappeared from the fender in 77. (last bit from the pic in the black book)
The 68 models are not Stingrays. Use of the Stingray name and script returned for the 1969 model year.
Actually Stingray was new for 69, mid years were Sting Rays. There was a GM advertisement for the 68 that referred to it as a Stingray. I only learned of that advertisement on another thread recently. I believe the concensus was that it was a mistake made by some publicity or advertising types because it is acknowledged in all books about Corvettes that the 68 was not designated "Stingray."
Agreed! They are all sharks (68-82) spawned from the Mako but they are not all Rays. Just like not all Camaros are Z/28's.
What the hell though, sharks, Stingrays, same family. <grin>
It't truly wonderful that this topic remains fresh and interesting even though we beat it to death anew every few weeks!! or... every few days!! And even more amazing, we work through the same tortuous arguments EVERY time!!! For example, person1 states that the 1968 corvette is not a Stingray because there is no badging on the car and the one word "Stingray" was not even invented until 1969. But then I interject that the 1968 Corvette was referred to as "Sting Ray" in the Chevrolet advertisements of the day, so it MUST have been a "Sting Ray" .... because that's what Chevrolet called it, so they must know what the car was, right? And then someone willl say, "They are all Stingrays to me"..... and then someone else will say "I don't really give a crap if it is a sting ray or a stingray or a shmingray" and someone else will say, "What for art thou Sting Ray? A Stingray by any other name would smell as sweet" and by then we will have 4 or 5 pages of responses, and then a new 77 owner will start a new post asking if his car is a Stingray!!!
A lot of people are seeing this question for the first time. When you belittle it, it makes new people feel unwelcome. I know a repeated theme can be tedious for the old timers, but just skip over it if you don't want to read it. But what do I know? I just came here last week, and I've had my car for 33 years.
and then a new 77 owner will start a new post asking if his car is a Stingray!!!
Hi all, might as well join in here.....My wife just bought a vettte....77 ?...... story is we were looking for a car for our daughter, who starts to drive next may, and stumbled upon this vette.... she fell in love with it and I did not dissuade her AT ALL......anyway, who is the vin # guru or where do I go to decode it......Robert
I would post a pic, but it appears I cannot, must read forum rules
i thought we were done with this 3 page topic last week! TAKE 2--!!!!,,, THIS TOPIC SHOULD RUN UP AT THE TOP WITH THE OTHER 3 THAT DONT ROLL ,,SINCE IT ASKED SO MUCH!!!
It's still a fun debate. Basically, everyone here is proud of their "American Sportscar " The only thing that matters is enjoying it.
If you like showing the car, keep putting more miles on the trailer vs. the vette.
If you like cruising with your "sweetie", the small block lets you carry on a conversation.
If you like racing, fire up the tri-carb big blocks!
Most non-owners don't know the difference anyway, they just think your car is cool. If they compliment your '68, '77-'82 stingray, just smile and offer them a ride.
...........my brother recently bought a ´81 vette and it´s a Stingray but some people say that the Stingray vetts were only available throughout the year 1976 is that correct or...?
Hey Moli, don't get put off by all these old smart azzes...........it doesn't matter whether it's a Stingray or a Sting Ray.......you gotta look at the bigger picture.........what your brother has bought is a Vette, and that's cool.......but a year from now he's going to be broke from buying parts, so you're gonna have to get a job to support him
