A question from a swedish newbie with a problem: The fuel gauge is pointing half an inch past "F" or approximately at three 'o clock. I've removed the meter from the center assembly because I thought the needle was stuck, but when applying a few volts to the terminals it moves back and forth. I put it manually on "E" and reassembled the whole thing, and when turning the ignition it returned to the exact same position. I also measured the voltage at the cable and it read 12.08 volts constantly. I guess this means that there is something wrong with the sender unit, but where is it located, and is there any way to get to it without lifting the body from the frame??? Another q while I'm at it, the wiper door opens as soon as I start the engine. When the car isn't running it's easy to push it back manually, but when running it opens and stays locked in place. Thanks in advance, i hope some of you guys with greater experience than mine can help out.
The cable that attaches to the sending unit under the tank had come loose! Simple fix, thank God.

Anyone with ideas about the other problem with the wiper door, please speak up, I'm listening!
Seems like I remember someone else having a similar wiper door problem and it was fixed with replacement of the vacuum check valve. There's all sorts of potential problems with these vacuum systems, but you may want to try replacing the valve first.

Since you are getting good vacuum from the engine, it could be as simple as the vacuum switch for the cover (located under the steering wheel) is on. Make sure it is pushed up (off). Or the hoses could be reversed to this switch, or one could be disconnected. Also, check for cracked hoses or other sources of a leak.
There is also a switch for this door on the wiper switch on the console (if it's like a '70). I'd check that area also.
Good luck -
