Default Still working on the Demon

I got the Road Demon set to the book, and played a little with the idle mix screws and float level. I'am making head way. But the timing, I bought a digital timing light, and per Barry Grant tech, I should start out with 14 to 16 deg. btdc. Sounds great but then the idle goes too high. and the temp. of car will go too high while just working on it running. Also at this timing setting the car will diesel and blow through the carb. when turned off. Any ideas?

Hi: This is my car. I'am sure my husband (JBR) needs help. He told me last night that he was going to buy me an eldelbrock, I acted excited then asked what is an eldelbrock? All I know is that he set everything to lars papers then tryed berry grants. I can drive the car but I need more. BY the way the timing question he told me the best total timing was 29 btc? He said he need 36

12 to 14 initial should be Ok with a total of around 36. No vacuum advance hooked up for this.

I would say start out with it at 12 degrees BTDC and work down from there....14-16 BTDC is too far advanced for a street car....JMO

Check the balancer. I had the outer ring on two balancers slip and cause the timing mark to be WAY off. It totally screws you up when you are trying to tune the motor.

At what rpm did you set it at 14º-16º? All of your symptoms, ("Sounds great but then the idle goes too high and the temp of car will go too high while just working on it running. Also at this timing setting the car will diesel and blow through the carb when turned off."), suggest retarded timing. For now, don't worry about initial and, with vacuumm advance disconnected, set total at 36º. Make sure that you're reving it high enough for all advance to be in before setting it.
