Default Need HELP! Engine start up

Ok I just put in a cam and now when I try to start it up it will run for about 3-5 seconds and then die. I have to keep the rpms up if I want it to keep running by pumping the pedal and then it wont even run for too long. And I also am getting alot of oil spuirting out around the #4 intake pushrod. Is that normal? I need help bad!!!

check timing. And can you explain a little more by what you mean about "oil spurting"
like is it shooting out the end into a rocker arm or what?

We have been playing with the distributor and it has no effect on it really. We know gas is getting to it cause when we turned the engine by hand gas was being pumped out of the hard line when we didnt have it hooked up to the carb. By squirting I mean it is reaching master cylinder. That means something is wrong with that lifter right? Hmmm looks like the engine will probably be coming apart again if this is true.

I agree with billambeer to recheck your timing - make sure your distributor is the proper location. Could be a vacuum leak. Did you degree your cam, maybe you are off a tooth? Good Luck!

Along with the other suggestions, try readjusting your valve lash. Kinda sounds like after start up the lifters are pumping up causing one or two valves to remain open. The key hint is the squirt of oil reaching the master cylinder.

Where is it coming from? If you have your valve covers off oil will splatter everywhere when the eng is running.

The oil is coming up through the pushrod and out the little tiny hole in the rocker arm. I think I am going to pull the water pump and timing cover off and make sure I have the chain on perfect.

The thing with the cam being degreed is also right, i know most comp cams have a built in 4 degree advance, check yours and make sure that you have it in right..

Ok I got the valve not to squirt oil as much so I am not worried about that anymore. My battery right now sucks. I charged it this morning and it has drained and I can only get about 5 seperate start up tries before I have to hook up the charger. Does anyone think my battery is to blame for it not running more than a couple seconds, due to it not having enough charge to emit a good spark? Or am I wrong? I am going to get my battery tested tomorrow and see if a cell is bad and probably pick up a new battery. Any help is appreciated.

try jumping it with another battery and jumper cables. If the battery is wiped, the alternator may also be bad. Have them both checked out. When the battery starts tot go bad, the alternator starts working overtime in order to keep the battery charged.
