Whats the best muffler that will fit a 72 that will give it the loudest LEGAL sound. I'd run straight pipes if I could. I heard Flowmasters ser 40 are good and loud andyone have them and your thoughts.
I don't know why the cops let bikes have open pipes and not some custom cars. I have a 1999 Yahama Road Star 1602cc with straight pipes and they are about 2x louder than any HD with straight pipes.

Depends where you live. In some parts of Palm Beach County, the cops carry around db meters and test bikes for noise. In Broward County and Miami/Dade, they can care less. Regardless, most cities/states have noise limit laws...just depends on if/when they're enforced.
I would think that chambered pipes are probably the loudest you can use, legally ('cept in Calif or where prohibited by law).
some kind of glasspack, the dynomax race bullets are glasspacks with very little glass and they are loud, very loud (eben at idle), especially the short ones. I have the short ones and love them. They are excellent for scaring the shi-ot out of people
Since I actually drive my car a fair amount, I find the loudness of the muffs to be not the overall issue, but that damn droaning I seem to allways get at 1800 rpm or so, especially if pulling a minor hill at slo speed throug the 'hood'....
drives me crazy....that's why I went back to stock on my '72...
I would love to have a deep bass rumble, loud, but NO DRONE>>>
Then you really want the race bullets, the noise will overwhelm the drone
Where you put the mufflers also greatly influences the noise (drone), if you put them under the rear bumper the whole area where the tank sits will act as a sounding chamber, if you put the mufflers somewhere under the floorboards it will greatly be reduced. The bullets are only a tad bigger in diameter than a 3,5" pipe so you can easily put them under the floor somewhere without worrying too much about ground clearance.

I have Flowmaster 40 series 2 chamber mufflers on my 81. They're VERY loud, but again, the drone people have mentioned drives me nuts. They sound great though, just like a V8 should sound.
TT, you really sure of that?? the locatiion?? interesting point, makes some sense, I guess....maybe I gotta look at that....
I had a set of bullett red Thrush tubes on there, but they not the typical glass packs in they seemed to have a series of plates protruding into the pipe, around which the gasses passed...probably fairly restrictive, but not as bad as stock, nice sound under the rear bumpers, but it drove me crazy with the droning....
you know, I"m not one damn bit happy with the stockish crossmember I have for the tranny mount, and so forth, need mod hell out of it for exhaust pipes....maybe I should look into your suggestion....any other comments??
TT, that damn thing is nothing but a straight pipe, it won't muffle a bit, I had glass packs before, they loud allright but too droney and sharp sounding, what I want to hear is a LOUD bass rumble, without drone, and higher freq noise...that rapp on backdown say, throttle closed...none of that, keep the sound below say 80 hz and kill anything above it....just as a guess.....
yes the perforated pipe does muffle, it muffles the high pitched sounds and leaves a ground shaking rumble. I'll take a vid of ym truck so you can hear it, will have to put the rear drum brake back toghether first...hold on Don't you just love the sight of a real open muffler? It should be possible to look yp the tailpipe and see the exhaust valves

Are you running a crossover pipe? From what I understand it really cuts down on the droan but keeps the rumble, will be redoing my whole exh from headers back and adding a crossover to go with my 40's.
Fevre, NO, I have an H pipe, can't immediately figger out how to do a X over....only so much rooom with that fat 700 tranny and the stock cross support....
