Looking through the Haynes manual, there seems to be a lot of different idle speed listed from 68 to 82,why is that?
Also what is the difference between Base idle & Curb idle.I need to set the timing on my auto 79,but would like to set the correct idle first.

Thanks Neil.
There were several different engines with different characteristics and there were also several different emission control systems used during that period, requiring different idle speeds. Base idle is in neutral or park, curb idle is in drive (and on some cars, with a/c on). For timing purposes, if you're going to set inital, it's safer to set the idle lower than normal for the adjustment. If the idle is high enough, some distributors will already be adding centrifugal advance and you'll get a bogus reading.
Thanks for the info Vetterodder,When I set the timing the distributor vacuum advance will be blocked off.I will set the idle at 750 & try it from there.
like Vetterodder says, turn the idle down as low as possible when setting the timing. Even with the vacuum hose blocked, its possible to get mechanical timing advance from the weights on top of the dist shaft if the idle is higher. The purpose for setting the idle real low is to insure there is no mechanical advance occuring when you take your reading.

Got it! I have probably been trying to set the timing with the idle to high.
