Viper and vert pics.
This evening I went to a local show event at an old K-mart and took a pic of a Viper. The owner and his wife listened as a couple of us Vette owners discussed the Viper roof line. I thought the bumps where for head room and she must have heard me say something about that. She later stopped me and told me the bumps in the roof line are for aerodynamics. The hood was up so I just took a pic of the back of the car. Needed some 93 octane on the way home, paid for the gas looked at the vert and decided too take a couple pics to share. I'm sure a Viper is a "kick" to drive, but I'll still keep the Vette and pocket the extra some $55K I'd need for that Viper with the breast on the roof. I actually think the C3's lines out-class the Mopar.
The Gen I's and Gen II Vipers are the closest thing to a modern day C3 as you can get. They designed it for looks NOT aerodynamics, BIG engine (488ci), and bare bones interior. The radio sucks, the A/C barely puts out, gets 15mpg, whimpy exhaust note and after 1hr you feet are on FIRE do the the engine and exhaust heat much like the C3's. But they are a BLAST to drive without question.
It would make a fine ADDITION to the garage, but it would NEVER replace my Vette.
Ever look at the roof of a C5 hardtop? There's a slight ridge that runs through it from front to back...and it _is_ for aerodynamics. While the "bumps" on the Viper GTS roof is more pronounced, the fact is that this was a design that came about through extensive wind-tunnel testing. It is for aerodynamics. If you don't believe me, research it.

The C6 has it as well and it is even more pronounced.
I drove one of the early vipers, was not all that impressed. The footwell was cramped and it sounded like a vacuum cleaner when you wound out the gears. It was quick, but not as quick as some cars I've owned, at least it didn't feel as brutally quick. My wife liked it a lot, said it fit her well. Maybe someday.
Oh that double bubble roof has been around since the 50's on an old Italian sports car (can't remember the name). Joe
Yes, the viper definately isnt a refined car but you have to give it to dodge. They made a true sports car that is all for speed and not comfort or elegance like other exotics or even the c5/z06. The poor exhaust sound is supposedly due to its uneven firing order, although aftermarket exhaust are supposed to make is sound very mean. And as for it not being very quick, the early vipers could hit 12 flat and the new generation have hit 11.7 all stock but with a good driver. That is pretty impressive for an all stock car.
I think those would be called "Gurney humps" named after Dan Gurney. I think that was the first time they were used on a race car. Maybe I am totaly full of beans on this one too.
