Default Need info on OFF-Set Trailing Arms

If anybody has them on their car please respon. My concerned is with the back spacing of the wheels. They will be going on a 1980 with 275/60/15 tires. I'm thinking of trying to use a 15 by 10" wheel with this tires. Any info will be great help

6". Also you will not be able to run a rear sway bar and you will most likely have to shorten your rear spring.

I've been round and round with trying to stuff the most tire I could under the fenders with my 80, and have found 9" to be as wide a rim as I could fit without the tire sticking out past the fender. I actually mocked up a jig to simulate larger tires and found that 28" tires (P325 50 15's) not only would hit the frame near the T-arm pocket, but of course the huge section width would stick out even if it was hitting the frame on the inside.......... Just too big.

I run P295 50 15's on 15x9's with offset T-arms, and have for years with no clearance issues, barely sticks out past the fender lip, and have kept my rear swaybar, stock length 360 lb glass spring.

If you figure out how to make a 10" rim work,......take lots of pics and post them. I for one would love to see how you did it.

There's more info on my website.

Here is a picture of my '74 with 275-60-15s on 15 x 10 Convo Pros with 5" backspace:

[IMG][/IMG]

As you can see, the tire sticks out about 3/4" past the fender lip. In order to mount this tire/wheel combo, I needed offset trailing arms and I had to order a composite spring shortened 3/4" on each end. As others have mentioned, it is the section width of the 15" tires that is the limiting factor with our cars. A 295-50-15 would have rubbed on the frame on my 10" wide rim, so I did not go that route. The more backspace and bigger tire you introduce, the more conflicts you will have with the spring bolts/spring, frame and fiberglass wheel well.

I have seen other cars on the forum with 295-50 tires mounted on 15 x 9s and 15 x 8.5s, but the wheel choices are limited (some, like the TT Ds, have too little backspace, so the tires still stick out past past the lip of the fender). There are other cars with 325-50-15s, but they stick out way past the fender lip (IMHO) or they have had to add flares.

The build tolerances on our cars varies from car to car and year to year, so you might find someone who was able to get a 15" wheel with 5 1/2" backspace on their car, but I know it would not fit on mine without a lot of work. Here is an "in progresss" picture of my new tire/wheel combo (front rims are not for street):

In order to fit this 30" tire (and drag radials in the future) inside the fender lip, I had to fab up custom mounts for rear coil overs, cut and re-weld some steel to smooth out the frame, trim the fiberglass and relocate the trailing arm mounting point. A lot of work, but I am happy with how it is turning out.

Incorrect. The offset t-arms have the wheel mounting location in the same place as stock. Also, the spacers have the effect of moving the wheel mounting point outwards 2". This increases required offset of the wheel but maintains the outer lip in the stock location.

If you tried to mount your C5 wheels on the offset t-arms, they may clear the arms but the wheel will move inward 2" and may have other interference problems and look terrible.

thanks steveG75 i was about to make a costly mistake...its fine with the spacers and looks pretty good, mainly because i blacked out everything behind rather than painting the calp. red or some other stand out color...in other words not drawing attent. to the rotor spacing...it would have been nice tho. thanks again

Default Off-set / Off-set

Make sure you get the off-set/off-set trailing arms and not the ones with just the front portion off-set. You will need the shorter spring to take full advantage of the rear off-set.

If you contact Dan at Van Steel he can set you up with all the correct parts. I would also recommend the composite spring if the primary use is street driving.
