Default Engine Paint

My block is heading to the machine shop at the end of the month. When I get it back, the work will go quickly so now it's time for me to start thinking about what paint to use.

What type/brands of paint has everyone been using? Has anyone used the standard Duplicolor engine enamel in rattle cans before? Or is there something better quality out there I should consider?

Regarding color, I'd like to go with a maroon, or a silver if that isn't possible. Course, I realize if I'm set on those particular colors, my options might end up being very limited.

Thanks.

I've always used regular automotive acrylic enamel catalized of not and both hold up well...the colors are endless

what's your intended use for the car?

Show car, original, or you just want it to look cool???

I've had decent luck with engine-paints you can buy at the local car-parts places...

But if you want it to look smooth, then I'd sand the block with 80-grit, to get most of the casting marks off... Then shoot it with 2 coats of House of Kolor high-build primer... Then hand-sand with ~220-grit paper, and apply 3-4 coats of urethene paint (solid color, no 2-stage systems! ).

Since you're only doing the block for now, you could get away with a couple of 1/2-pint cans of paint (don't go for larger containers, get several small containers; HOK puts a nitrogen blanket on their products- opening the can releases it, and the shelf-life becomes only a few months)... Good news is, with such small amounts of paint, the costs would be very low. And, you'll have extra paint for those extra accessories that always seem to look better "if they matched the engine..."

Keep us informed... And some pics would be VERY cool!!!

I think I'd fall into the 'just look cool' category.

Then blow off sanding the block... Just make sure it's very clean, and then go with the primer and paint.

You won't be disappointed!
