I was wondering if anybody was using an aftermarket shifter (like B&M or Hurst) for their automatic transmission (THM400). I was wondering what model would work best and trying to get ideas for mounting and center console modifications. Anybody got any pictures? Or ideas ?
Far as I"m concerned the best auto shifter was the Pontiac 'His and Hers' of the 60's....otherwise known as a Dual-Gate in the aftermarket...Hurst of course....even the Pontiac version had Hurst on the lever...
I think the shifter will barely fit a vette console, I found the prices way to high even for used units....so I mimicked it just fine with another Hurst shifter bar....
Summit Racing parts is right here in town. I have a 700R4 I bought and returned every shifter made. either the cable linkage was to long or I didn't like the mount sticking 6 inches above the consol.
I did see a custom made base with a B&M reverse shift pattern on TH400 C-3 at the drags once. But the base was hand made to fit in the stock location.
gkull,
Did you try a Hurst Quarter Stick? I'm switching to a 700R4 and want a new shifter. I was kind of hoping the Quarter Stick would work somehow in the stock location without too much modification. If you tried it... how did that one fit? Stick out too much?
I forgot to mention other than the Camero shifter cables are way to long. the shifter bases are actually to long and would require buchering your console. Which I wasn't willing to do.
I ended up using my die grinder and cutting another detent in my stock base. So I can put my tranny in first. I screwed my position indicator up and snapped it off because it wasn't made to go back that far. It's been years, but I think that i could have repositioned it so it would not have broken. others I know of bought the 4 speed auto shifter assembly out of the 82 Vettes with the correct console indicator plate
So my advice on aftermarket shifters is contact the manufacture and get the measurements on the base and cable length and then decide what's exceptable to you.
My car has pretty much been transformed into a Pro-Street car. As far as my centersole I'm keeping it the same (hopefully) but I had a custom aluminum plate made to replace the console plate. The heater controls and ashtray are gone and I have my two fuel pressure gauges and a nitrous pressure gauge there. Gonna run switches there for all the accessories (nitrous, fans, waterpump, bottle warmers, etc.) So I have room for the aftermarket shifter, I was hoping to cut the aluminum plate to fit around the shifter.
I didn't mind the thaught of a non stock looking interior,in fact down the road I plan on aftermarket seats and some custom interion work.So far I installed a B&M Megashifter, and wood steering wheel.
