After replacing the stock AM/FM cassette player in my 82 with a Kenwood AM/FM cassette and all new speakers it still didn't have any decent bass from the rear.
Yesterday I installed a Kenwood powered subwoofer (100w peak) and what a difference! I now have a very nice sounding stereo. Its very compact and comes with a wired remote. Highly recommended if you want to add some bass. Got it through Crutchfield for $219 and free shipping.
I'll try to get some pics but basically it sits against the rear of the cargo area. The subwoofer is very compact (15"L x 8"W x 4 5/8" H) It weighs 7.7 lbs.
I didn't mount it using the included brackets. Instead I mounted it using industrial strength Velcro on the bottom (the hook half of the Velcro) and set it into position. The Velcro grabs the carpeting and prevents it from moving.
I tapped into the power antenna wire for a switched power source and ran the power and ground directly to the battery compartment. I routed the RCA wires under the carpeting (If your radio doesn't have RCA outputs it also has connections for speaker leads), down behind the drivers seat and under the carpeted console trim cover. Same for the wired remote.
I have some exposed wires right now until I figure a way to route everything under the carpeting.
That is the same sub I put in the back of my 80 about a year ago. Brent and I have posted many a time on the merits of this particular sub. It doesn't suck!
I got the sub off Ebay for $125 approx. It did not have the mounting brackets so I fabbed my own.
I mounted it onto a carpeted 3/4 inch plywood L bracket, so the rear fiberglass wall does not take the weight of the unit, but only locates the whole assembly from moving with 2 bolts. It rests on the floor and still allows room to put the T-Tops in back.
Go to google or froogle.com and enter the part number in. I found a few for about $160. I was thinking of installing the same thing in my car after hearing these testimonials. I talked myself out of it but now you guys have me thinking about it again!!
