Default Steering knuckle question

So, I'm still making slow progress on the front end rebuild of my '69, and while cleaning parts, I noticed something odd. My car has power steering, and the tie rods were in the forward holes (I believe that's the correct location for p/s), but the rear holes on both sides have large rivets in them. It appears that there has been some interference with the tie rod end, so I'm planning to remove the rivets, but I just thought it was weird that the holes were filled. Anybody have some insight?

My guess is that the plug is simply to keep corrosion out of the tapered hole. The mating taper on the tie rod stud depends on a smooth clean bore for it to seat properly.

Yep, those are normal. I just removed mine when converting to Manual Steering. The forward hole gives you the standard 16:1 ratio while the outer hole gives you 20:1.

Me personally, I love the manual steering. The responce/feel is so much better than the PS.

I think the rivets were added to power steering cars to make sure you don't use those holes for you tie rod ends. If you do remove the rivets and try to use them with power steering, the passenger side tie rods will come very close to hitting the power steering control valve that is bolted to the end of the pitman arm. At least it'll come close to hitting when you have the car jacked up. Perhaps if you lower the car, the tie rod will actually hit the control valve. The Assembly Manual for my 1968 warns abainst using the hole which is riveted on your car. On my 1968, it was not riveted.

Thanks for the info everyone. I suppose I'll leave 'em in, since they appear to be numbers matching.
