Here is one of the runs at the auto X that was not succesfull. It was one of the more fun runs. As I was spinning out I brought it back and it went around completly so I just stood on it going backwards. It made a nice smoke show and the crowd loved it. Here it is during and right after driving out of it.
I did not even finish the run. I just drove to the finish line and went back for more. I did win my class that had 8 C3 cars in it. It does kill the time but it sure was fun.
The C5 and C4 cars that had sticky tires and were set up were in the 34 to 36 second range. I ran a best of 39.5 on rock hard BFG tires and "old" suspension technology. Also the first time I had done this so I thought it was pretty good.
MEGLADON - There are autocrosses here in Houston. Just not very often. The San Jacinto Corvette Club puts one on every year at the police acedemy. I went 3 years ago and had a good time. Try checking or asking around in the Southwest section.
I enjoyed the pics. Looks like you had fun! I have never tried slalom racing. From your experience, aside from tire wear, what are the mechanical weak points in a C3 when placed under that kind of stress?
The biggest thing I could change is tires. In watching the other guys run they are all on 17 inch tires or Hoosier tires for Auto Xing. I have the VB suspension on mine and it seemed to hold the car fairly neutral. The tail seems to want to come around and could probably be balanced a little more neutral. I am no expert by any means I was just trying to get a good feel for how the car turns. Smooth is best. Don't jam on the brakes or slam the go pedal it just shifts the weight of the car. I think a good setup with good tires on a C3 or C2 could run very good times. There was a C2 there with Hoosier tires and a SCCA driver running in the 35 second range with a pretty stock for 67 350. I had a SCCA driver ride with me and give me a few pointers. He was running his VW wagon just performance tires around the course in around 38 seconds. My best was 39.5 and the better drivers with good rubber and cars were in the 34 to 36 range. So driver skill plays a big part in this. HP doesn"t hurt either.
