Z-bar question for removal???
First question of the day. Pulling the SB today and want to know how I should handle the Z-bar. Should I unbolt it at the block, or at the other end where it attaches to the frame? Anything else I should know about the linkage & such?
Screw the top nut on the connecting rod toward the firewall to take the tension out of it then undo the pivot fitting. Loosen the nut on the frame and lift up on the z-bar then it should just slide out off pivot stud that is on the eng. Mkae sure you undo the lower rod so you can pull the z-bar right out.
While you have the z-bar out check the ball stud that screws into the engine block. I found mine to be worn pretty good. I picked up a new one from the local chevy dealer for less than $10.00. My tranny use to grind going into reverse. I thought I had a gear problem in the tranny. When I removed, cleaned up and reinstalled the z-bar, the problem with the tranny went away. Any misalignment of the z-bar can be critical to the proper function of the tranny.
