Default Convert to 1 wire alternator

I have a 68 with a modern crate engine, 350 with vortec heads and HEI. Its time to put on a better alt bracket and chrome alt. How do I hook up a one wire alt. Apparently one wire is connected and the others are not connected?

Here is the current part on the car.

you will need to bypass the externial volt reg. A couple of places sell a jumper set which makes it a plug in.

Nope. I simply bolted on the hot wire to the battery and left the other wires off. I just cut off the plug and tucked the two wires back up into the loom. I did use the ground wire to ensure that the case is well grounded. I left the regulator and all other wiring in place and system works great for me in my '64.

That is the advantage of running a 1 wire alt? Doesnt seem like there is any.

The advantage to a one wire is that you don't need the voltage regulator anymore, the alternator has an internal one.

Basically your correct. It`s really used a lot of times on street rods and ski boats as only the battery wire is used where wiring and space is at a premium or minimum with no regulator required. It`s built in! A clean and simple charging system.

One wire alt takes a little higher rpm to start charging the batt too. 200-500 rpm maybe. So if you just start it up and only putt around the batt will finaly die. Not a good alt for trailer queens. cardo0

No, mine charges just like the old system, actually better because it is a higher current design (i.e., 100-amp as opposed to the old 42 amp unit). The thing about 1-wire alternators is that they will not start their charging cycle until you get the rpm high enough to activate the field and start the charging process. A simple blip of the throttle to about 1,000-1,200 rpm does it for me. (And who doesn't do this anyway?) The system then stays active until the ignition is shut off.

I own a alt/starter rebuild shop and sell a few one wire alts. Mostly I sell them to people who have serious wiring problems for cars, trucks and tractors. They usually work great but on some applications that need a larger pulley (tractors) they need to be revved up to excite the rotor inside the alt. Once thats been done it will charge perfect till you shut it down and restart.

We mostly do the 10si Delcos but can do the newer and smaller CS130 alts now. The CS series is what goes on the late 80s-mid 90s cars and put out 105 amps stock. They are alot smaller and have a ton of differant front housings that will fit just about anything. Only problem is they cost more but are worth it if your stuck finding a way to mount a 10si one wire alt and it won't fit.
