When I got my car it had a set of speakers in small cases just forced in the rear corners and held tight with some old car towels, believe it or not it works fine. I want to upgrade my speakers so I started yesterday and cut the wood for this set up: https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...D=71&TopicID=3. I am building it out of 1/2 plywood instead of 3/4 pine board. I increased measyrements to keep outside dimensions the same. I should have it finished before the weekend so I can listen on the way to Carlisle.
I am currently using Pioneer Premier 3-way 6x9's and have changed Amp to Audiobahn. But you really could use anything you like, the only concern would be how deep the speakers are (magnets)
I like these because I can still fit in my t-tops (and I had them left over from my Lotus)
as long as your back there I would recommend adding reflex insulation, really cuts down heat and noise.
Mounting is the easiest part , its just wedge fit.
In the picture below you will see that there are two boards (end piece)that hold the speakers connected by a center connecting board, you just screw an end piece to the connecting board then put outward tension on the remaining board and screw to connecting board. using screws you can take it apart take it out or adjust it as often as you like.
Then mount the center plate to mount your Amp to, make sure you do a cut out for the courtesy light

These are the pieces you need to make, the thin pieces at the top are used on the top. I made a template from cardboard first than traced onto plywood. lots easer to work with that the wood .
Oh, these are the origanal seatbelts, cleaned with carpet cleaner.
Lotus.............."the thin pieces at the top are used on the top." Sorry to continue to bug you about this, but how on the top? At an angle or parallel for strength? Again, very nice! Thank you, 73 Vet
I am happy to help and pay back some of the great advise I have learned on this forum.
The top pieces are at a 90 degree to the face. like a ledge or top, I put them on so that they rest up against the back wall of the luggage compartment that way the speakers would not touch the back wall and it creates a tighter enclosure. than I packed in between with cotton that you get in craft stores for making pillows for a tighter bass. and the ledge gives for a more finished look but you really can't see them anyway because of the rear window trim piece.
I covered the wood with auto carpet from Menards. I used 3M spray adhesive. the little black screw covers you can get at Home Depot for a more professional look.
WOW those are awesome, I saved all your pics from this so I can pass it along to my hubby!! I sent you a Private Message, so check it out!!! Gosh I just can't get over how good that looks, I am totally impressed with it!!! AWESOME, and your seatbelts look really really really really nice too! I am about to change mine out to lap belts and get new ones. As well as a new interior.
