Default Installing Carpet Plugs

Are there any tricks to installing carpet plugs? The buggers just don't want to go in. I tried using a phillips head screwdriver in the center as I pushed but also found that the gas tank is close behind the rear deck area. Since I do not want to view my tank sticker that way, what other tools do you recommend?

Put some grease on the tip, push with a screwdriver or punch till it stays, grab with pliers on the other side and pull through. You CAN reach them outside without the tire tub from under the rear, and from above in the engine comprt.

Good idea. Didn't think of greasing them up. Unfortunately, nothing is easy on these cars. Removing the tub can be a pain in the butt.

Thanks.

I'm installing carpet right now. Where are these plugs you speak of? I haven't run across any holes! The schnitty carpet I pulled out was not installed properly...

Default Carpet Plug Locations

There are three carpet plugs located in the back of the coupe. One is directly above the lamp in the center and the other two are about 18" to either side. You may need to poke around with your finger to feel a recess. The forward plugs are located in the floor pans on both driver and pass. side. Look above your pedals on the d.s. and same area on pass. side. The junky aftermarket carpet I installed did not make it up to the plugs on the front of the car and those plugs are still there from when I removed the carpet.

Coupe', eh? 'Spose the verts have'em? I've looked pretty close at the area around the rear astro vents and didn't run across anything resembling either plugs or holes... Haven't got to the front yet.

I've got two holes in each footwell. Nothing in the back. I went over it with flashlight this morning.

My 79 only has one whole in each front foot floor pan. A rubber cone located in the center of each floor pan. I think they are for drainage?
Didn't come across anything in the rear compartment at all. What year cars are you guys working on?

I've got drain plugs all over, but these are smaller (5/16") and up high in the footwell. Way too high to be anything but fastener holes. My drain holes are closer to 5/8" dia.

Working on a '68 roadster.

CGGorman,

I just finished a carpet install on my 68 roadster. No plugs or holes in the back deck, just the astro ventilation. I left the plugs in the front wells alone as the replacement carpet did not quite reach them.

Yeah....that's exactly the problem. I would think that the repro carpet manufacturers would account for the carpet plugs and add a few more inches to the front carpet (pass & driver's side).

That's what I heard.

Also...mine is only about 2-3 yrs old and is totally frayed under the floormats and wildly discolored and faded.

I will buy a new set at Carlisle. (Al...Bright Blue 80/20 for 70 Coupe, please)
